Dwight Howard finished with 23 points and 10 rebounds and the Orlando Magic spoiled John Wall’s NBA debut with a convincing 112-83 victory over the visiting Washington Wizards on Thursday night.
Vince Carter had 18 points and Jameer Nelson added 16 for Orlando, which tied a franchise record for largest margin of victory in a season-opening contest. The Magic also beat Toronto by 29 points to start the 2001-02 campaign.
Wall had 14 points and nine assists in his first pro outing. The No. 1 overall draft pick in last June’s draft made just 6-of-19 shots from the field.
Cartier Martin came off the bench to score a team-high 17 points for Washington.
Rashard Lewis (13 points) also reached double figures for Orlando, which visits the Miami Heat in a highly anticipated matchup on Friday.
Orlando jumped ahead from the outset, making 11 of 17 first-quarter shots in building a 29-15 lead. The Magic led 58-34 at halftime.
